CAUSA INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

‘Monitoring steam sterilization processes’

 Thursday, April 21st 2016

Congress Centre “Landgoed Huize Bergen” Vught, the Netherlands

Worldwide, hospitals and healthcare facilities, use steam sterilization to produce sterile medical instruments. To ensure sterilization conditions `routine monitoring and control shall be performed on each operating cycle’ (ISO 17665-1). In some West European countries this monitoring is performed with measurements of pressure (p) and temperature (T) over time, where the pressure is measured in the chamber and the temperature often in the drain of the sterilizer. The literature indicates that pressure (p) and Temperature (T) measurements alone are not sufficient to ensure sterilization conditions in steam sterilization processes. In the 2015 WFHSS conference (Lille, France) at least 4 speakers stipulated that measuring p and T is not enough to ensure steam sterilization conditions (Dr. Dominique Goullet (France) , Mr. Paulo Laranjeira (Brazil), Mr. Hildebrand van Doornmalen (the Netherlands) and Dr. Joost van Doornmalen (the Netherlands)). Additionally, the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS, http://www.iapws.org/) state that the relation between pressure and temperature is only valid then and only then when saturated steam (100% water molecules) is present.

Goal of the symposium
The goal of our third international causa symposium is to share monitoring methods that ensure saturated steam sterilization conditions in steam sterilization processes with a broad audience.

Set up of the symposium
After an introductory presentation on monitoring steam sterilization processes, five companies will share their method how they ensure these sterilization conditions. The order of the presentations will be decided randomly. In the last presentation of prof.dr.ir Klaas Kopinga the presentations and methods will be summarised. After closing the symposium there is time to individually discuss with the presenters.
